This is the last newsletter for 2017! Enjoy your winter break and we’ll see you next year!

Winter Concert Wrap Up: Great job to every student who performed at the Winter Concert! I am very proud of you all for a successful performance. A special thank you to all of the parents and families who have supported your children through their musical journey so far.

Marching Band & Colorguard Photos have been distributed. If you did not receive your photos, please check that your child picked them up.

Lost & Found Pile There are several items that are in the band room left over from performances, field trips and other events. Please claim your items in “the pile” near the whiteboard in the front of the classroom before winter break or else they will be donated to the Garage Sale.

Monday, December 18 – Jazz Band Tie Tutorial Please bring in a necktie and Mr. Franco will be leading a lesson on how to tie a necktie. We will meet at 8:20 a.m.

Jazz Band Auditions we will be holding auditions again the week of January 16-19. All students are invited and welcome to audition. Audition music and requirements will be available before winter break. Open rehearsals will occur during Zero Period on Tuesday 12/19 and Tuesday-Friday the first week back from school. Students and parents should know that this is a semester-long commitment and includes about 5-7 all day Saturdays in Feb/March/April, in addition to receiving a grade for zero period.

Advanced Orchestra Auditions are open to all current Intermediate Orchestra members. Music and audition requirements will be available before winter break. Auditions will occur on an appointment basis the week of January 16-19. Please direct your questions to Mrs. Neumayr.

Instrument Maintenance Winter break is a great time to give your instrument a check up! Take this opportunity to check your instrument and supplies so that you are ready for rehearsals upon returning from winter break. Some examples include:
Check that instrument is in working order. If not, take it into a repair shop (recommended shops include Imperial Band Instruments (La Habra) and Music and Arts (Anaheim).
Throw away moldy reeds and purchase new ones. It is a good idea to have at least 3-5 reeds in working order
Swab and sanitize your mouthpiece (yes even brass mouthpieces). Do not put it in the dishwasher, it will ruin the mouthpiece. Rubbing alcohol with a microfiber cloth and cotton swabs should work just fine.
Make sure you are fully stocked on supplies: rosin, cork grease, slide cream, reeds, valve oil
Check that all keys/valves/buttons/levers work well
Take all non-instrument items out of your case – they can shift around and push against the instrument, leading to bent keys and other issues
