BYEU Weekly Newsletter 3-19-18

Jazz Band will be attending the Aztec Jazz Festival on Saturday, March 24th. Please watch your email for call times and details.

All Classes – SmartMusic Assignments: SmartMusic assignments are on their way! Each class has been “assigned” to practice some or all of their current pieces. Those assignments show they are worth 1 point, but will not be graded. They are for students to practice throughout the semester.
Please check in with your student that they are completing the SmartMusic assignments. All current assignments will be due on Friday, April 13th. **Intermediate Orchestra will not be using SmartMusic at this time**

IMPORTANT INFO – Due to the time of day that we are performing, all district buses are unavailable as they are driving routes for elementary schools. Students will need to be dropped off at the PYLUSD Performing Arts Center between 8:15-8:30 a.m. We will be taking a bus back to BYMS at the end of our time at the Festival. Carpooling is recommended to ease the impact of many students being dropped off at once.

Each group prepares three musical selections, one of which must come from a required list. These pieces will be performed in front of three judges. Each judge gives the group a rating, written comments and oral comments on a digital recorder. This is not a competition. You are judged in areas such as musicianship, tone quality, balance, intonation (playing in tune), technique, stage presence, interpretation, etc. Depending on how each of these categories went for that performance, on that day, you are assigned a rating of Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor. Each group will also be required to sight-read a new piece of music for one judge. This determines whether or not the group really knows how to read music along with all the “details” that are put in the music. They will be assigned a rating for sight-reading, too. After the performance, each student can purchase a pin, sticker, or patch corresponding with the rating his or her group earned.

The best aspect of festival is that we get a chance to prepare every detail of this music to the best of our abilities, and receive constructive criticism from “new” listeners (our judges) to tell us what we can work on to improve our performances. Feel free to come and listen at Festival. It’s FREE!
